Grimselworld Trail

Unescorted family hiking trail - 6 days / 5 nights

Unescorted Hiking trail for the whole family.
Go hiking in Switzerland- and with the children having fun too! The Grimselworld is situated between two alpine passes the Susten and the Grimsel and is home to the KWO Power company. Unusually KWO has created an outstanding touristic network to make the unique, natural beauty of this area accessible to everybody.  Have fun on one of the steepest funiculars, try the hanging bridge at Trift , descend into an underground world of tunnels, shafts, turbines and generators in one of the power plants or enjoy the outstanding views along the way.

Programme

Day 1: Arrival
Flight or rail from the UK to Switzerland. Train transfer to Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland. Depending on your flight times there is the possibility of an excursion to the Aareschlucht in the afternoon or a visit to the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Overnight in Meiringen.
Day 2: Travel to Handeck
Morning departure by postbus to Handeck. Check-in at kids Hotel Handeck. Take the children on the Crystal Trail.  The route affords a unique insight into the wonders of nature as it leads along the shores of Lake Raeterichsboden, along the river Aare, over bridges and under steep, granite cliffs. There is also much to be learnt at the 'adventure stations' and 'crystal caves' along the way. Alternatively use the hotel's wellness area or enjoy lounging on the large lawn by the hotel. There is a children's playground and also a delightful little stream to play by.  In the evening visit to the nearby power plant (subject to vailability). Overnight Hotel Handeck.
Day 3: Day trip to lake Gelmersee
Starting the trail today you will walk past mighty dam walls, artificial lakes and ascend steeply to lake Gelmersee. From here take the steepest funicular back to Hotel Handeck. Hiking time: 4 hours. Overnight Hotel Handeck.
Day 4: Trift suspension bridge
Transfer to the Trift railway station. Fantastic high alpine circular trail crossing the Trift canyon with help of one of the longest rope suspension bridges in the Alps and viewing the Trift glacier at the same time. By train down into the Gadmervalley and ascending again by train to Tällihütte. Sit on the sun terrace of your mountain hotel and enjoy the sun setting. Hiking time: 3 – 4 hours. Overnight in Mountainhotel Tällihütte. 
Day 5: Tällihütte – Engstlenalp
High altitude trail to Engstlenalp. Walk through the diverse alpine flora, past mighty rock walls and enjoy views of the historic pass road of Susten. Transfer by postbus to Meiringen. Hiking time: 4 hours. Overnight in Meiringen.
Day 6: Departure
Transfer to Zürich for your return flight or rail to the UK .

Accommodation
All hotels are small family-run typically Swiss hotels with a warm welcome. All hotels used are of a 3 star standard and have private facilities.

Price: From £725 per adult , £ 418 per child (age 8-12yrs), £ 539 per child (age 13-15yrs) sharing a family room for 2 adults and 2 children.

Price includes: Flights, airport taxes, carbon offset contribution (see climate care), 5 nights accommodation with breakfast and dinner, 2nd class rail transfer from and to airport, luggage transfers on 2 days, detailed hiking itinerary, maps and suggestions at your first hotel.
