Glacier Express to St. Moritz
Dijon - Zermatt - St. Moritz - Cologne
This exciting new tour takes in the entire length of the Glacier Express and is based in the superb resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. A sparking holiday among the glorious Swiss Alps. One of the many highlights of this holiday is the journey on the Glacier Express.
| Day 1: | London to Dijon We depart London St. Pancras by Eurostar for Paris, with a meal served on board, and then cross Paris by coach to join the high-speed TGV service to Dijon for one night at the Mercure Dijon Clémenceau, close to the centre. You may have a little time to wander through the historic city. |
| Day 2: | Dijon to Zermatt From Dijon, we travel by TGV into Switzerland and transfer onto the efficient Swiss rail network, which takes us on a spectacular journey up the Rhone Valley to Brig, where we change to the narrow-guage railway for the mountain village of Zermatt. |
| Day 3: | Zermatt and the Gornergrat Today we enjoy a guided tour of beautiful Zermatt with its wonderful timbered buildings and English Church dating back to 1870, followed by a visit to the Alpine museum. We then ascend the Gornergrat Bahn mountain railway which climbs to the summit of the Gornergrat at 10'134ft (3'089m) and offers spectacular views across the valley to the Matterhorn. |
| Day 4: | Stresa and Lake Maggiore Today we travel by train into the lovely mountainous region of Northern Italy to Stresa, on Lake Maggiore. You will have free time in this elegant town, noted for its wide promenades and attractive gardens. |
| Day 5: | Day at leisure in Zermatt Today is free in Zermatt. Perhap relax and take advantage of the hotel's pool and spa facilities, shop in some of Zermatt's glitzy shops and boutiques, enjoy a walk along one of the many marked trails or climb the Kleine Matterhorn of Rothorn by cable car. |
| Day 6: | The Glacier Express to St. Moritz Today we take the famous Glacier Express narrow-guage train, along its entire length, from Zermatt to St. Moritz. After descending to Brig, the train climbs up the Rhone Valley to Andermatt and then towards the Oberlap Pass, the highest point of the route at 6'670ft (2'033m). Lunch on-board the Glacier Express is included and served at your First Class seat. The train descends through pasture and woodland to the Rhine, along the broad valley and through a gorge before reaching the peaks of St. Moritz. On arrival, we transfer to the Hotel Monopol for a three-night stay. |
| Day 7: | Over the Bernina Pass From St. Moritz we join the narrow-gauge Bernina Express, climb over the spectacular Bernina Pass to more than 7'000ft (2'134m). Enjoy the breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks as we travel to Poschiavo, a picturesque town with pastel-coloured buildings, cafes and restauraunts. You have some free time for lunch before we return to St. Moritz. |
| Day 8: | Day at leisure in St. Moritz Today is free to enjoy St. Moritz. Perhaps explore the surrounding mountains by cable car or mountain railway, using your Swiss Pass and St. Moritz travel pass, or ascend the Diavolezza ato 9,970ft (3'039m). |
| Day 9: | By Train to Cologne After descending from St. Moritz, we travel by EuroCity train into Germany, along the scenic Rhine Gorge to Cologne. We arrive late-afternoon and spend one night at the unique 5-star Hotel Wasserturm, beautifully converted from a historic water tower. |
| Day 10: | To Brussels and London We depart for Brussels and connect with the Eurostar to London, where we arrive into St. Pancras after a complimentary meal and drinks on board. |
The Hotels:
Our hotel in Zermatt is the Parkhotel Beau-Site (4-star), a Belle Epoche hotel opened in 1907. The hotel is located in a quiet part of Zermatt but is within easy walking distance of th town centre. Rooms are traditionally decorated and comfortable and hotel facilities include an indoor pool and spa area.
In St. Moritz, we stay at the Hotel Monopol (4-star), a comfortable modern hotel located on the main square of this flamorous mountain town. Rooms are modern and well-equipped and has a small wellness centre, with stunning views of the lake and mountains beyond.
